Do We Know What Annual Means?
I saw a very confusing headline this morning that read 10th Annual Sergeant Ron Helus Ride for the Blue Returns to Ventura. I was confused because I was almost certain that Ron Helus was the Sheriff’s Deputy killed by the California Highway Patrol at the Borderline shooting, and I was absolutely certain that the Borderline shooting was less than a decade ago.
A quick search revealed that I was right. The Borderline shooting happened at the end of 2018, just six years ago. This fall will mark the seventh anniversary. So, how then, could there have been nine annual rides for Ron Helus, when he’s only been dead for 6 1/2 years? Either someone doesn’t know what annual means, or they were riding in his honor for three years before he died. Or, I suppose the other possibility is that they renamed an existing annual ride in his honor. If that’s the case, they should start the ride count over.
