That Can’t Be Right
It was early, I had just woken up, and my eyes weren’t able to fully focus yet. So, I read the headline: “Texas prepares to execute man as attorneys ask the supreme court for a stay,” as “Tax preparers to execute man as attorneys ask the supreme court for a stay.”
It’s a dark commentary on the current state of the world and the U.S.A that my immediate thought upon misreading that headline wasn’t they can’t do that, but rather, damn! the Intuit lobby has become so powerful they can do that now. Then, I started to wonder what reason tax preparers could possibly have for executing someone. So, I opened the article, and when I read the headline again in a larger font, I realized my mistake. Texas executing someone hardly seems newsworthy, but that’s a different, older, dark commentary.
